Tierra del Lago - Gary

Tierra del Lago Cigar Co. was established in 1904 by several Lakeland businessmen that included  Samuel Lindsay Asbury Clonts, William H. Streeter, Morris G. Munn, Bruce Neff, L. J. Nieuwenkamp and H. J. Drane.  The name Tierra del Lago comes from the Spanish translation of Lakeland.  They produced the La Luz, Uno, La Palina and Soledad cigar brands.

Originally, Tierra del Lago Cigar Co. was housed over the Clonts store on the second floor of the Clonts Building at 228 E Pine St., corner of Kentucky Ave. & Pine St. in Lakeland.  It was the first of several cigar factories that sprang up around Lakeland due to the cigar industry's success in Ybor City and West Tampa.  In 1908 they moved to this new three story 9,700 sq. ft. cigar factory building about a mile east of Ybor City on 9th Ave. & 36th St., in an area known as Gary which has since been dissolved.  Tierra de Lago Cigar Co. operated from this location until 1919 when they moved to a facility in Ybor City a few blocks northeast from the Perfecto Garcia & Bros. building on 18th St. between 21st and 22nd Ave.  Tierra del Lago Cigar Co. remained at that location until 1926.

In 1919, this building was acquired by the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Florida, Tampa Lodge No 240.  The Lodge occupied it until 1974 when they moved to a larger facilty.  Ownership since then is unknown to us. When the photos below were taken in 2016, the True Love Missionary Baptist Church occupied the building.  The Tampa bay Times reported on October 3, 2023 that the building was being converted into an event space.
