Hacienda El Majagual
Even though the sector or "barrio" where this hacienda is located is called Emajagual, its current owner Elias Fernandez told us the hacienda was and is still called El Majagual. It was originally owned by unknown Spanish immigrants and acquired in the latter part of the 19th Century by Clotilde Santiago of Coamo, also owner Hacienda Carmen.
During the early years of the 20th Century it was owned by the Fas family of Cabo Rojo during which ownership Elias began working at the farm. Sugarcane has not been harvested here since the days of Clotilde Santiago's ownership, however, the remains of what used to be the sugar factory have been very well preserved.
As of 2015 the farm was being used to grow corn and other produce, Elias still uses oxen driven plowing methods and goes to the fields on horseback.
The aerial pictures at the end of the gallery below were taken by Carlos Aleman in December 2021.
