Florenciani - Las Marias

Ownership of this hacienda is commonly attributed to José Florenciani del Toro (1911-1997) who is credited with the invention of a unique and peculiar system of drawers to dry the coffee beans. However, it appears José inherited the hacienda from his father Nicolás Florenciani Lacorte (1870-1930).

The 1920 census shows Italian immigrant Nicolás Florenciani Lacorte, who arrived in Puerto Rico in 1879, as owner of a coffee farm in Barrio Chamorro located at "Camino Vecinal #13" off the road from Lares to Aguadilla.  Nicolás was the widower of Maria Josefa del Toro Vallés (1880-1918) who died victim of tuberculosis.  At the time, Nicolás lived with his mother Concepción Lacorte (spelled Locourt on her death certificate) Pascual (1832-1922) and seven sons, Juan, Nicolás, Victor, Vicente, José, Miguel and Pedro Florenciani del Toto.

Though possible, no relationship has been established with Vicente Lacorte Florenciani, (1849-1897) one time owner of Hacienda Jardines, also in Las Marias. Vicente was the son of Vito Modesto Lacorte (1822- ) and Ana Maria Florenciani (1826- ) and was married to Nieves Bartolomei Córdoba.

Hacienda Florenciani was located in Sector Laguna of Barrio Cerrote of Las Marias.
