Casa Aboy - Miramar
The design of the "Swiss Chalet" that came to be known as Casa Aboy, was commissioned by Ramón Aboy Longpré (1890-1965) in 1922 to the firm Ferrer & Pons. Their design was inspired by the work of Antonin Nechodoma, however even though the design is sometimes attributed to Nechodoma, he was only a collaborator and the design is not to his name. Ramón Aboy Longpré was in the lumber business, on June 23, 1910 he married Carmen Ferrer-Otero (1889- ) and had five children; Ramón (1911), Carmen (1912), Hilda (1914), Gabriel (1916) and Irma (1917). The house is currently a cultural center known as Centro Cultural Ramón Aboy Miranda thanks to the generosity of Ramón Aboy Miranda, the son of Gabriel Aboy Ferrer and his wife Rosa Julia Miranda..
In 1954 Aboy Longpré’s daughter Carmen Ferrer-Otero, who married Eng. Luis Valdejulli Duprey, authored the book Cocina Criolla, one of the best known books written on Puerto Rican cuisine. Another interesting side note, actor José Vicente Ferrer-Otero Cintrón (1912-1992) better known as José Ferrer, who won the 1950 Best Actor Oscar Award for his performance in the movie Cyrano de Bergerac, was the nephew of Ramon Aboy Longpré and Carmen Ferrer-Otero.
The Casa Aboy was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
